Scoliosis Treatment
What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is one of the most common spinal disorders, affecting approximately 6% of adolescents in Israel. It refers to the lateral curvature of the spine, creating an “S” or “C” shape instead of a straight vertical line. These deformities are clearly visible on front-view X-rays. Shoulder and pelvic asymmetry may also occur due to vertebral rotation.
The severity of the spinal deformity is measured in degrees:
- Mild: under 20°
- Moderate: 25°–40°
- Severe: over 40°
In some cases, scoliosis develops due to neuromuscular conditions (such as cerebral palsy or congenital spinal anomalies), injuries, or sensory asymmetries (like unequal hearing or vision). Scoliosis tends to worsen during adolescent growth spurts and is more common among females.
Without treatment, spinal curvature may lead to back pain, visible deformities, and even nerve conduction problems.

Diagnosis
Parents often notice the problem first due to visible asymmetry in the shoulders, ribs, or pelvis. Diagnostic imaging plays a crucial role. While traditional 2D X-rays are commonly used, they may underestimate the extent of spinal rotation. At Ichilov, advanced EOS imaging systems provide 3D spinal reconstructions, enabling precise assessment and optimal treatment planning.
Scoliosis Treatment Options
The Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center offers three primary approaches to scoliosis treatment in Israel:
1. Monitoring
In mild cases, scoliosis is regularly monitored for changes or progression. This approach avoids overtreatment while ensuring timely intervention if needed.
2. Bracing
For progressive cases, bracing is used to apply external pressure to guide spinal growth. This non-surgical method is effective in preventing further curvature in growing patients and is commonly used in pediatric scoliosis treatment.
3. Surgery
When scoliosis progresses beyond 40 degrees or causes severe symptoms, scoliosis correction surgery is recommended. The goal is to straighten and stabilize the spine using bone grafts, metal rods, plates, or screws.
In most cases, a spinal fusion procedure (arthrodesis) is performed to join two or more vertebrae, preventing further curvature. This procedure eliminates or significantly reduces symptoms and improves quality of life.
Minimally Invasive and Advanced Surgical Techniques
At Ichilov, surgeons also perform minimally invasive scoliosis treatment for eligible patients. This approach involves smaller incisions, reduced tissue damage, faster recovery, and less postoperative pain. The surgery may use a combination of posterior, anterior, or lateral access routes, depending on the case.
For complex cases, advanced scoliosis treatment may involve custom-designed titanium cages or bone grafts taken from the patient or a donor. State-of-the-art tools, such as endoscopic cameras and surgical microscopes, assist in accurate and safe procedures.
Postoperative Recovery and Care
After surgery, patients stay in the hospital for 4–7 days. Pain management is tailored to individual needs. Movement training begins within 2–3 days. A rigid back brace may be prescribed for support.
Patients are guided on how to sit, stand, walk, and change positions safely.
Discharge instructions include:
- Wearing the brace as prescribed
- Avoiding twisting or bending for 3 months
- Postponing contact sports for up to 12 months
Follow-up care includes regular checkups and imaging to confirm spinal fusion. Most patients return to school within 2–4 weeks.
