Bone scintigraphy without waiting is available for international and local patients. No special preparation is needed, and there is no requirement to fast before the procedure. The scan is painless. If you have prior imaging studies such as CT, MRI, or PET from another center, please bring them on a CD.
Bone Scintigraphy (Osteoscintigraphy)
Bone scintigraphy in Israel, also known as osteoscintigraphy, is a reliable diagnostic method that enables full skeletal imaging. It is widely used to detect fractures, infections, degenerative bone diseases, and bone scan metastases. The specific type of radionuclide bone imaging is determined by the referring physician.
Preparation for the Procedure
How the Procedure Is Performed
- Planar Osteoscintigraphy: A radiopharmaceutical, commonly Tc-99m MDP or Tc-MDP, is injected into a vein. Patients are encouraged to drink 6–8 glasses of water after the injection to facilitate distribution. The agent accumulates in bones over 2–4 hours. During this time, patients may wait at the clinic or leave temporarily. Once ready, a nuclear bone scan is performed, lasting about 30 minutes.
- Dynamic Bone Scintigraphy: This involves sequential scanning. After intravenous injection of the tracer, the initial dynamic phase takes about 10 minutes. A delayed skeletal scintigraphy is performed 2–4 hours later.
- SPECT or SPECT-CT: For greater diagnostic detail, bone scan procedures using 3D visualization such as SPECT or SPECT-CT may be conducted. These are done after the planar scan and typically add about 10 minutes to the total time without increasing radiation dosage or requiring additional injections.
Are There Any Side Effects?
There are no known side effects from Tc-MDP in Israel or other types of bone scintigraphy abroad. The procedure is safe and well tolerated.
