Pediatric Surgery
Conditions and Treatments
Children from birth to age 16 who require surgical interventions are treated in this unit of Israel’s children’s hospital surgery department. The team includes 6 senior physicians and about 30 highly qualified nurses across 36 beds. The multidisciplinary staff also includes a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, nutritionist, social worker, speech therapist, and psychologist.
Facing child surgery in Israel can be stressful for both the child and the family. Doctors, nurses, administrative staff, and psychologists all work together to provide emotional support and care.

Procedures and Surgical Areas
The pediatric surgery in Israel department specializes in:
- General pediatric surgery: treatment of inguinal and umbilical hernias, cryptorchidism, hydrocele, and abdominal and chest abnormalities.
- Inguinal hernia correction: A unique laparoscopic approach allows bilateral correction in a single operation if a hidden hernia is suspected on the opposite side.
- Testicular surgery: Diagnosis is recommended at 6 months, with surgery ideally performed at 8–10 months of age for the best outcomes.
- Oncological surgery: Treatment of tumors in the neck, chest, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract, in close cooperation with the pediatric hemato-oncology department.
- Congenital anomalies: For complex defects identified prenatally, the pediatric surgery team collaborates early with obstetricians and geneticists to develop a treatment plan before birth.
- Chronic conditions: Including IBD, gallstones, GERD, as well as acute conditions such as appendicitis, peritonitis, testicular torsion, and varicocele.
- Other procedures: Circumcision, central venous catheter implantation (Port-A-Cath, Hickman), bronchoscopy, and tissue biopsies.
Advanced Techniques
The department uses cutting-edge techniques in children’s surgery Israel, including:
- Laparoscopy and thoracoscopy: Minimally invasive procedures using a tiny camera and instruments through small incisions. These methods reduce recovery time and surgical trauma.
- Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS): Particularly effective in treating inflammatory chest conditions, significantly reducing hospitalization.
- All procedures are performed in state-of-the-art operating rooms under pediatric anesthesia, prioritizing fast recovery and minimal invasiveness.
