Surgery details

According to Professor Igor Sukhotnik, Head of the department of pediatric surgery, such procedures have not previously been described in the global medical literature in pediatric practice using a robotic system. “We were unable to find publications describing this type of surgery in children performed with the assistance of a surgical robot, which makes this experience particularly significant for us,” he noted.

Over the past year, Professor Sukhotnik performed three surgeries on children with this condition; however, in the most recent case, robotic technology was used for the first time. The patient was an eight-year-old child. Duodenal duplication is a congenital anomaly in which an additional segment of tissue forms adjacent to the wall of the initial part of the small intestine. The defect may cause abdominal pain, vomiting, and symptoms of intestinal obstruction and requires surgical treatment.

The surgery was performed jointly with Professor Nir Lobetzky, Head of the Liver, Pancreatic and Transplant Surgery Unit.
