Precision and innovation – the new and most advanced contact device in the world

Most skin tumors are in the head and neck area. Patients with BCC, SCC cancer, melanoma, whole body skin carcinomas up to 1 cm in depth or a benign colloid tumor (scar) are referring to tumor removal by Mohs surgery or by radiation to the lesion area. Using the contact device, unique in Israel, allows for an effective topical and safe treatment for skin lesions, without the need for subsequent plastic/cosmetic treatments.

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer.

For the surgeon, especially when the tumor is on facial skin, removing the cancerous lesion constitutes a double challenge due to the need, on the one hand, to remove the entire tumor, and on the other hand, not to remove more healthy tissue than necessary. The concern is that removing tumor tissue with safety borders, which can reach several centimeters, will result in an unnecessary aesthetic damage.

Recently, the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center has purchased a contact system, the most innovative and advanced in the world, designed for low energy radiation of skin lesions (up to 100 kilowatts). The system is equipped with a special high-resolution ultrasound imaging feature, determining the depth of the lesion, and facilitating the decision regarding the strength of the ray and the precise dimensions of the treatment area. The patient feels nothing during the treatment and it does not entail any anesthesia or sedation. The treatment takes place by holding the radiation device to the lesion area and no special preparations are necessary.

Precision alternative for standard treatments

Most patients with skin tumors: patients with BCC, SCC skin cancer, or a benign colloid tumor (scar) are referring to tumor removal by Mohs surgery or by radiation to the lesion area. Using the contact device allows for an effective topical and safe treatment for skin lesions, without the need for subsequent plastic/cosmetic treatments, unlike the alternative of Mohs surgery, during which more and more layers are scraped until the lesion is fully removed. This might leave scars that sometimes require plastic correction or reconstruction.

This system is also an effective alternative to the traditional treatment by radiation of cancerous lesions through accelerators. Since the tumors in question are highly common among senior individuals, some of whom suffer from limitation of movements and mobility, it is very difficult to place and harness them in the accelerator bed. Treatment with the contact machine does not require the patient to be harnessed with a mask or special equipment, so that limited patients do not have to move to the treatment bed and they can remain in their wheelchair or gurney. Thanks to the machine’s arm, it can reach the patient in his natural position, with no need for special harnessing and there is no concern that he might move during the radiation, which may result in the focus of the treatment to shift and the treatment area might even be missed. In addition, the radiation is very precise and encompasses the entire lesion area, without radiating the surrounding edges.

The technology is used primarily in melanoma patients, who have undergone surgery, following recurrent, BCC patients, people who are not candidates for surgery, the elderly and physically handicapped.
Treatment duration is 17-30 treatment sessions.
