Bone Marrow Transplantation: A Chance for a New Life at Any Age
Age is not an obstacle when it comes to saving lives.
Bone marrow transplantation at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov) is performed not only for young patients but also for people of advanced age, provided their general condition allows the treatment to be carried out safely and effectively.
Bone marrow transplantation is one of the most complex and life-saving procedures in modern medicine.
It is used to treat leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, severe anemia, autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus.
At Ichilov, transplants are performed under the supervision of Professor Ron Ram, one of Israel’s leading hematologists. Approximately 80 transplants are performed annually, including both allogeneic (from a donor) and autologous (using the patient’s own stem cells).
One of the key distinctions of bone marrow transplantation at Ichilov Hospital is the absence of strict age limitations.
In Russia and other CIS countries, according to data from the Pirogov National Medical Center, age restrictions are applied:
- autologous transplantation is usually performed for patients under the age of 65,
- related donor transplantation performed for those under the age of 55,
- unrelated donor transplantation performed for those under the age of 50.
In Ichilov, transplants are successfully performed even for patients well above these age limits, with careful medical evaluation and a fully personalized approach.
For example, a 69-year-old patient recently underwent a bone marrow transplant at Ichilov, with his 35-year-old son serving as the donor. This case is vivid proof that at Ichilov Hospital age is not a limit when comes to saving lifes.
At Ichilov every patient receives not just medical treatment but a real opportunity to return to a full and active life regardless of age.
